For this miniature I rubbed back the indigo background to lighten the sky over the horizon, and to soften the island, to make it recede. Normally this would be done with a rag, but for small paintings like this I use cotton buds.

Shri Sita Rama Enthroned, gouache on Japanese paper, image digitally finished/corrected. The original painting was done as a commission several years ago, and is based on an Indian miniature from the 18th or 19th century (left image). Recently I decided to clean up, with Photoshop, the scan I took as a record, and crop it to a square format.
